(Who has given up hoping for a ' Stainless Steel Rat' adaption) 'Benjamin Button' wasn't an exception either - there are plenty of book to film adaptions that do this really well: " He's just not that into you", " What to expect when you're expecting", " Marley and Me", " Julie & Julia" & even " Grey's Anatomy" pretty much just took the concept and title from the original and created the rest from whole cloth. Nobody would have wanted to see 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button' if it had stuck to the original narrative and character development. Plenty of films get made just for the original settings or concept from the source material - with the rest of the narrative and character development created from whole cloth. Yes there are very cinematic visuals, but that's not enough for a compelling screenplay. You would have to make major changes, because there really is barely a narrative, and no character development.
